They may be Hollywood royalty, but Javier Bardem and wife Penelope Cruz looked like any other normal couple in love during a romantic stroll in Madrid.

The smitten couple strolled down the street with their arms wrapped tenderly around each other - and the actress at one point nuzzled up close to her husband.

The Spanish lovebirds had been relaxing with friends at an outdoor cafe drinking beer and wine.

While they seemed to be embroiled in a intense discussion with their dining pals, Penelope broke off from their highbrow talk to share a joke with Bardem.

The stunning Vicky Cristina Barcelona beauty wore an oversized flowing maxi dress and sunglasses, while Bardem opted for a more casual look with a baseball cap, T-shirt, jeans and trainers.

Parents Bardem and Cruz enjoyed a rare moment of spending time with just each other - with 18-month-old son Leonardo nowhere to be seen.

But the busy pair can't relax too long - they are both heading back to the film set.

Cruz will team up with director Pedro Almodovar once more - this time in black comedy The Brief Lovers.

After that, she will appear alongside her husband in Ridley Scott's The Counsellor, which is written by No Country For Old Men's Cormac McCarthy.

Bardem will be seen next as the Bond villain in the eagerly awaited new 007 adventure Skyfall, which will be released later this year.

He told Total Film about the role: 'I think its always about the material in the script. When I read it, I felt Wow, this is powerful! Of course, you have everything that you can expect in James Bond movies, but it has more than that. Its very accomplished and powerful. And then I talked to Sam and he gave me his ideas. I thought they were very good brave, in some way.'
