The coat came up to her knees and featured gold buckles on the cuffs and the waist to give it a sartorial twist.

The actress kept her long brown locks wavy and she smiled generously as her latest movie debuted in Italian cinemas.

Penelope's brother Eduardo has also worked on the film, as he composed the soundtrack for the drama.

It tells the story of a single mother who brings her teenage son to Sarajevo, to visit the place where his father died in the Bosnian conflict years ago.

Emile Hirsch and Jane Birkin also play parts in the star-studded film.

There was no sign of Penelope's husband Javier Bardem at the premiere, as he was presumably busy promoting his own hit, Skyfall.

But the actress recently spoke out about her new found family happiness, claiming that becoming a mother to one-year-old son Leo has changed her view on life.

'It's everything you've heard about, but it's so many other things as well,' she said during an interview with the Brisbane Times.

'From the moment you have a child everything changes, everything. You look at the world in a completely different way through your child's eyes. The way he looks at the sun and the moon and the stars, and the way he is so impressed by nature, he is really making me reconnect with it.

'It's true that you revisit your own childhood. It releases things that you thought you had forgotten.'
